WALK THE MEDICINE WHEEL

What if there was a map for exactly where you feel stuck right now? Not a quiz or a personality type but a map used for thousands of years by Indigenous peoples of the Andes to understand how we move through change. It’s called the medicine wheel, and it describes four inner states we all cycle through. You don’t need to know anything about shamanism to relate to it, just a willingness to notice, honestly, where you are.
I'm going to use one example all the way through, the desire to leave your job and start something of your own, because most of us have either been there or are there right now. But swap it for whatever your version looks like: leaving a relationship, moving somewhere new, finally starting the creative project you keep putting off. Ready? Let's find you on the map.

Serpent — "I know I should, but..."
Serpent is the part of you that is wired for survival. She's practical, cautious, and deeply loyal to what is known. She's not pessimistic, she's just very, very aware of everything that could go wrong.
If Serpent is running the show right now, leaving your job sounds like this: "I can't just quit. I have bills. What if it doesn't work? What if I fail? I'll wait until I have more saved up. I'll wait until the kids are older. I'll wait until it feels less terrifying."
Sound familiar? Here's the thing about Serpent: she's not wrong. She's keeping you safe. The problem is that sometimes safe stops being safe, it just becomes stuck. And there's a big difference between genuinely needing more time to prepare, and using preparation as a reason to never actually start.
The question Serpent eventually asks you is this: Is this caution or is this a life I've outgrown?

Jaguar — "Something has to change and I mean it this time"
Jaguar is the part of you that's done. She's moved past fear and landed somewhere fiercer, call it anger, call it clarity, call it the moment you finally stop making excuses for a situation that isn't working.
If Jaguar is running the show right now, leaving your job sounds like this: "I am so done. I've known for ages this isn't right for me. I'm not scared anymore. I'm just angry that I've waited this long. I'm ready to burn it down and build something new."
Jaguar is the energy of endings. Of letting things die so something else can live. She's the part of you that finally clears out the wardrobe, ends the relationship, hands in the notice. The gift of Jaguar is courage. The challenge is making sure you're moving toward something, not just running from what you can't stand anymore. Burning it down feels good but what are you building in the ashes?

Hummingbird — "I can't fully explain it, but I know"
Hummingbird is the part of you that operates on a different kind of logic, not spreadsheets and risk assessments, but gut feeling, vision, and a pull toward something that just won't go away no matter how many times you try to be sensible about it.
If Hummingbird is running the show right now, leaving your job sounds like this: "I can picture it so clearly. My own thing. Work that actually means something to me. I don't have all the answers yet but I'm moving toward it, quietly, steadily, one brave step at a time."
Hummingbird is famously tiny and famously unstoppable. She migrates thousands of miles on almost nothing because she's following the nectar. She doesn't wait until the conditions are perfect. She just goes. If you're in Hummingbird energy, you've already made the decision on some level. What you're working on now is trusting it.

Eagle — "I can see the whole picture now"
Eagle is the part of you that has found some altitude. From up here, you're not caught in the panic or the anger or the longing. You can see all of it, and yourself within it, with a kind of calm clarity.
If Eagle is running the show right now, leaving your job sounds like this: "I understand why I stayed as long as I did. That chapter made sense. And I can see clearly now that it's over. I know what I'm stepping into and I'm ready. This isn't a leap in the dark. It's a deliberate choice."
Eagle isn't cold or detached. She's clear. She's the version of you that has processed enough of the fear, the grief, and the excitement to be able to act from wisdom rather than reaction. Most of us visit Eagle in moments, a quiet morning, a long walk, a really good conversation, before getting pulled back down into the noise. The practice is learning to return there.
So… which one are you?
Here’s the truth: most of us are a mix, and it changes. You might have Hummingbird’s vision but Serpent’s “not moving today” feet. Or you’ve done Jaguar’s deep clearing work, only to find yourself wondering what comes next (Hummingbird seems to have flew off).
None of this means you’re behind, stuck, or doing it wrong. These aren’t levels to pass through. They’re different terrains, each with its own medicine and invitation. You’ll move through all of them in your lifetime. Sometimes gently, sometimes like a plot twist you didn’t ask for. The medicine wheel isn’t asking you to be anywhere other than where you are. It’s asking you to notice where you are, honestly, and ask: what does this moment need from me?
That’s the real practice. Not rushing to Eagle, but meeting your current place fully. And that’s where things actually start to shift.
